Valen's Story

Our son Valen was born prematurely and there were many complications during his hospitalization which has left him with Cerebral Palsy. CP affects people in a variety of ways and to different degrees. In Valen's case, his Cognitive/Thinking mind is working well. In many ways he is like any other two year old. He is bright, happy and very funny, he likes peek-a-boo games and toy cars.

Unfortunately, his Motor/Moving body is severely impaired. He has just turned 2 and is not yet able to sit up, roll over or do many of the activities that we take for granted in our day to day lives. Many years ago, a child such a Valen would have a rather grim prognosis.

Luckily, we live in a time of great progress for the disabled. Through Early Intervention and intensive alternative therapies it is possible for Valen to overcome many of his challenges. Most of the important therapies that we are doing with Valen are not covered by insurance. valen undergoing HBOTLast year we went for a total of 80 hours of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in Pennsylvania which costs about $135 per session ($110 per hour + $25 lodging). During HBOT we get into a pressurized tank for an hour at a time and Valen receives pure Oxygen. He has made some great progress during the HBOT as the Oxygen is able to reach the damaged area of his brain and new connections are made. I have written a testimonial on the Jenny Rose Center website if you are interested in finding out more.

We also began another type of physical therapy last year called Feldenkrais. We are starting to see some terrific things happen with Valen's movement and his understanding of his own body. He has a regular Feldenkrais physical therapist in Woodstock, Zahava Wilson, that he sees 3 times per week. Additionally, we take him to another therapist in New York City, Marcy Lindheimer, of the Feldenkrais Learning Center every 4-6 weeks for a few sessions each 45 minute session is $150. One of our goals is to take Valen to California to see Anat Baniel who founded the methodology of Feldenkrais that he is learning. This trip would cost approximately $5000 including traveling and lodging. It is very important that we keep up with this rigorous therapy schedule over the next few years when his brain is still so malleable. We are currently doing a minimum of 5 therapy sessions a week and more if possible.

Now we are asking for your help. We are asking for your prayers and positivity. We are also asking for your donations because with your support and our hard work, we can give Valen the best opportunity to have a terrific life, in a working body.

Thank you very much,
Cheyenne & Django
